Bernie Madoff – Number 1 on the list of “Greatest Financial Frauds In History”

Money fraud is something a lot of us contribute to gangsters and other less than honorable folks. However, there have been numerous cases throughout history that would suggest big business can be just as partial towards financial fraud as anyone else. These are the financial frauds that shook the world.

Bernie Madoff

Madoff was one of the biggest hedge fund managers in Wall Street, before being charged with an elaborate Ponzi scheme. Before he got to carve up his billions between close alliances he was caught and the world’s largest scam came to an end. Madoff used numerous high profile investors to fund his filthy scheme, as well as local charities and pensioners. Other’s included Britain’s largest banks and a number of others fell for the scheme and lost out before Madoff was jailed.

Enron

Enron was another multi-billion dollar scheme. Enron was an energy company based in the US that contrived a number of dealings to show it up more profitable than it really was, before it fell to bankruptcy and shareholders lost out. Enron was a significant scam that cost the average man billions.

Parmalat

The Italians’ biggest food business underlined the fact that fraud is not merely an American issue. Over £10bn in declared assets disappeared overnight in one of the biggest scams in history. The company collapsed in 2003 after it found a £3Bn hold in its accounts. According to unofficial statistics around £13bn of the company’s assets are still unaccounted for.

Barings Bank

The UK’s oldest merchant bank collapsed under the weight of massive fraud and gambling by its own Nick Leeson. Leeson, who was a trader, spent billions gambling and then trying to cover losses from Barings post in Singapore.

Amaranth

This is thought to be the largest hedge fund collapse that ever existed and was caused by misplaced bets on fossil fuels. Losses reached around £4Bn before the company got rid of some of its trades to prevent it collapsing. A number of other issues caused the fund to almost collapse the company having to sell almost all its assets to avoid default. The questions of tax control of hedge fund managers and also of the risk assessment group meant the company was irreverently damaged.

PPI Scandal

The British based payment protection insurance scandal showed just one of many wrong doings in British banks. PPI was offered as a way of insuring against some forms of loans and the people who took them out. However, banks charged and missold PPI to numerous people in the hope of making profit. They are currently repaying missold  PPI claims to thousands because of their fraud.

There are all sorts of frauds and scams out there and it seems that numerous somewhat respected institutions are the ones behind the issues at hand and causing the problem. These issues can cost billions and affect the average person to a significant degree as we only know from the PPI scandal among other things.

Construction Job Salaries

Statistic:

According to the U.S. bureau of Labor Statistics over the past 6 months construction job growth has averaged at 28,000 per month compared to an average of 10,000 per month from 2011-2012. This upward trend is good news for the construction industry.  Over the last six months the construction industry has added 169,000 jobs.

Retail Job Salaries

Please note that on retail job salaries the numbers drastically vary.  A retail sales associate has an average salary of $19,000 while the average salary for sales leaders and executives is at $211,000.

Employment in the retail industry is experiencing a loss by 24,000 jobs for the month of March 2013.  “Clothing accessory, building material, garden supply, electronic and appliance stores contributed the most to this decline according to the U.S. bureau of labor statistics.

Government Job Salaries

Statistics:

Government job salaries have continued to trend down since 2008.  22 percent of the job losses in this field have to do with post office jobs.   Over the last month 14,000 government jobs were lost.

To settle a credit card debt yourself, before proceeding with negotiations, make sure the account is at the least 120 days past due. For even more leverage wait until the account that you are negotiating on, gets assigned to a collection agency.

Negotiating with the original creditor to settle a debt, could trigger a credit card lawsuit.

Before starting your negotiations mentally prepare.  Illustrate to the collection agency that you will have no choice, but to file for bankruptcy, if they are not willing to work with your limited funds. 

Take your emotions, and lock them in the closet before attempting to settle credit card debt yourself.  

Put on a Happy Face and Hide Your Emotions -  Remember, creditors are expecting you to be emotional when settling debt.

Step by Step Instructions on How to Settle

Credit Card Debt Yourself

Step One

You must document some type of hardship letter.  Keep this as professional as possible.  Send the hardship letter to the collection agency, with your debt settlement letter, which we are including an example of below for you to use.

Step Two

Illustrate to the collection agency that you lost the income required to continue paying anything on that account. 

Input all of your expenses including groceries, gas, rent, house payment, car payment, insurances and every single expenditure that you can think of on an excel document.  Add up your expenses and net income on this excel document. 

Now you have a hardship letter, a debt settlement letter and a detailed budget analysis.

Show the collection agency that you had to cut your grocery shopping down to half of what you were buying two years ago.  Show them grocery receipts.  Have your plan documented with proof. 

Step Three

Start your negotiations at 20% of the total debt owed.  For example, if you owe $100,000, offer the collection agency $20,000 to satisfy the debt.

They may come back at you with a counter offer.  If it sounds good, then sit on it, and then accept it within a few days. 

The collection agency will probably end up settling with you at around 60%-80% of what your total balance is, if you are successful.  Sometimes you may do better, and sometimes you will do worse.

There is a chance the creditor will sue you and take you to court, which is one of the main reasons why people would prefer to use a professional debt negotiating company to settle their debt.

If you wait until getting sued, to try to join a settlement program, most companies will deny you.  Most debt relief companies will deny a person from the program if they already have a lawsuit on one of their accounts.

Step Four

A person may want to give a counter offer if they are unhappy with the first amount that the collection agency is willing to accept.

In your counter offer, explain to the collection agency in writing that your family is willing to give you an extra $__, if they are willing to accept __% of the outstanding balance.  Explain to the collection agency that you have now completely exhausted all means of getting any other funds and that if they don’t accept, then you will file for bankruptcy.

Continue to express to the collection agency that the attorney who you are consulting with is providing you promising news about getting approved for a chapter 7 bankruptcy, but this is something that you are trying to avoid.

Step Five

Don’t agree to anything over the phone, without demanding that it also be in writing.  Require everything in writing for your protection.  Creditors are known to lie and use scare tactics on the phone.

1.  Creditors are fast to file a lawsuit and sue you.  A creditor is more likely to sue a person if they know that person is trying to negotiate debt on their own.

My opinion is that it should be illegal for people to own weapons unless they are in law enforcement, the military or if they are some type of authority figure.  Weapons should become illegal in the United States.

The law should require every single school, mall, college and bank in the United States to have an armed guard at their front door.  Our schools will then be safer.
